Threatened, Endangered, and Sensitive
Species Evaluations
The
federal Endangered Species Act requires investigations of potential
effects on threatened and endangered species for projects involving
a federal action or federal funding. Other species may be protected
by state, local, or tribal statute. EMI biologists are permitted
to conduct standardized protocol surveys for species including
the Mexican spotted owl and southwestern willow flycatcher.
EMI has conducted biological surveys for a variety of projects
including road construction, forestry fuels thinning, and water
development.
Threatened & Endangered Species Services include:
- Threatened
and endangered plant and animal surveys
- Preparation
of Biological Assessments/Biological Evaluations
- Assistance
with Section 7 Consultation
- Development
of mitigation plans for avoidance, restoration, enhancement,
or protection of habitat.

Wildlife Studies
EMI
biologists are experienced in conducting surveys for mammals,
birds, fish, amphibians, and reptiles. EMI has conducted wildlife
surveys throughout the west.
Wildlife services include:
- Wildlife
surveys and inventories
- Management
Indicator Species assessments
- Habitat
mapping, mitigation plans, and enhancement
- Wildlife
impact assessments
- Wildlife

Vegetation
Studies
EMI has surveyed millions of acres of vegetation for agency
and private sector projects. GIS and aerial photos are often
utilized for these surveys.
Vegetation services include: |

Wildland Fire
and Forestry Planning
Catastrophic
wildfires on public, private and tribal lands led to the development
of the National Fire Plan which was created to rehabilitate
forests and woodlands and restore fire-damaged ecosystems. EMI
foresters and biologists have extensive experience in planning
fuels reduction projects, preparing fire management plans, and
developing wildfire hazard assessments for areas in New Mexico,
California, Montana, Utah, Arizona, and Colorado.
EMI
fire and forestry planning services include:
- Fire
Management Plans
- Hazardous
fuels assessments
- Wildfire
Hazard Assessments
- Fire
Prevention Plans

Geographic
Information Systems (GIS)
| ArcGIS
is utilized by biologists, archaeologists, and environmental
scientists to map and analyze data. For example, ArcGIS
has been utilized to determine the number of acres of
fuels treated with prescribed burning and/or mechanical
treatments under different action alternatives. The number
of acres of suitable habitat for an endangered species
impacted by different alternative actions has been determined
using ArcGIS. EMI utilizes submeter accurate GPS instrumentation
in the field for many projects. EMI also is capable of
printing large format color maps. |
